Hardwood Boards
We are pleased to announce that we are now stocking hardwood boards. Starting out we will be stocking Applachian Red Oak and Alder.
Appalachian Red Oak
Red oak is probably the most requested and most commonly used hardwood. There are a variety of choices available when it comes to buying Red Oak. We have chosen to stock Appalachian Red Oak because it tends to have deeper color throughout the boards. Otherwise, it has the same characteristics as the other varieties of Northern Red Oak. The grain is open and slightly coarser (more porous) than white oak. Most hardwood lumber is sold by the board foot. We have gone one step further and had our inventory milled to standard sizes and surfaced smooth on both sides. Nominal sizes that we have in stock are 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8. These will actually measure 3/4" thick, with widths measuring: 3 1/2", 5 1/2", and 7 1/4". Lengths available will range from 6' up to 10'. It is graded FAS. The boards have few to no knots and/or defects. Many of the defects that the grade allows for have been eliminated by the milling that we have had done. Please stop by and take a look.
Superior Alder
Alder is another very common hardwood used in construction of doors, cabinets, and moulding. It has a more uniform appearance with less defined grain than oak. It has a uniform color of light brown. It is often used because it can replicate the look of cherry, maple, or birch. We have the same milled dimensions and lengths in stock as in the Red Oak: 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8. One difference between Alder and Red Oak is in the size of the trees. Alder trees do not get large enough to yield many wide boards. In order to get wider width boards, more narrow boards are often edge glued to yield a wider one. This will be present from time to time with the 8" wide boards that we stock. Grades in Alder are different than most other hardwoods as well. The grade we have chosen to stock is the best grade available. It is referred to Superior Alder, and will have smaller, tight knots with much less present than the other available grades. The other common grade available is called Rustic Alder, which will have larger knots that can be loose or cracked.
